CFRE is an independent organization that works with 15 organizations in five nations. The organization incorporates findings from an international research study that has identified fundraising competencies. CFRE meets international standards for the operation of certifying bodies and is a recognized professional certification in five countries.

Certification requires a successfully completed written application and exam, and a pledge to follow the organization´s code of ethics and accountability standards. Applications are judged based on education, professional practice, performance and service.
